10 Out of 10: Feeling Alive

Can you craft your way to a 10 out of 10?

In partnership with

What will make you feel alive today? That’s the message that I have written on a sticky note hanging from my computer monitor. It’s been more than two years since I’ve asked myself that important question. In 2020, my work led me to interviewing and and being in conversation with people over age 65 to learn about what makes them feel alive. What happened, was the opposite. In the two years I spent learning about later life, I learned about what makes me feel alive. Turns out, being in conversation with those who’ve lived the longest about what makes them come alive, helps put life into better focus.

On a team where weekly we asked one another, “What’s your aliveness score?”, it was impossible not to be introspective. Each week I had to choose 1-10—and in order to do so I had to ask myself, “What brings me alive?”

My score, believe it or not, was often linked to my creativity. While I didn’t have a day job in the arts, it was common for me to be a 10 out of 10 when I was in the midst of a creative project. I was a 4 when I was in spreadsheets too long. I was a 10 when I was creatively masterminding something.

Today, I’m a resounding 10 out of 10. I made mushrooms from a Uline catalog and for just a second attempt at paper mache, I’m feeling pretty good about them. Shout out to Jane, Jennifer, and Paulina for choosing this project.

January Project Theme: New Beginnings

What would make you feel alive today? Our January project is about new beginnings. Tell us about your attempts and trying something new, and whether or not that was a 10 out of 10 experience here in our activity feed.

💡Exploring More New Beginning Ideas

Last week we dove into a few ideas for upcycle projects you may have never tried. This week, we share a few more. What new technique will you try this month?

Decoupage seashell trinket dishes

This is one I’ll be trying this week so stay tuned. I happened to have some old seashells on hand and in the spirit of trying new things, I want to see if I can make them into cool little trinket dishes with some creativity. Here’s a tutorial from ehow »

Fabric photo frames

We’ve shared this project idea once before, but we love this take by lonefoxhome. Especially because it includes not just the photo mat, but the frame, too. This solves for us a problem with broken old frames that are in disrepair. Just cover ‘em up! Thanks for the tip Lone Fox! (May give this one a try this week, too).

Egg carton paper

Are you, too, seeing tutorials on handmade paper and watching them, imagining ‘someday’ you’ll try it? Well that day is here! It’s try new things January and now’s the time to pull out the ol’ blender, set aside your next egg carton, and give it a go. Here’s a bit of inspiration from sibster.
