Cozy Crafting for Winter Evenings
My upcycles for a cool night in
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing better than settling in for a cozy night of crafting. Winter evenings are the perfect time for upcycling projects that keep your hands busy and your heart warm.
For me, making things with my hands feels grounding—it brings me back to who I really am. No matter how tangled I get in technology or the demands of day-to-day work, nothing reconnects me quite like diving into a pile of art supplies and creating something new. Screen time just doesn’t compare to the tactile joy of crafting.
This week, I’m leaning into that feeling—exploring my desire to lose myself in craft projects that bring comfort, creativity, and a little piece of serenity to these winter nights. Join me by sharing yours in our feed at the button below.
Craft Projects for a Cozy Evening In
When I think about cozying up for a cold winter evening in, I’m imagining a fire in a fireplace, some holiday light bulbs illuminating the room with colorful bursts of light, and perhaps a holiday movie classic playing in the background. That’s my happy place this time of year. There’s only one thing that could make it better, a craft project. Here are a few things you’ll find me upcycling on these cool winter nights:
Catch me embroidering an old sweatshirt
There’s a sweatshirt in my wardrobe that’s aching to be embroidered. It has a bleach stain on the neck from the time I wore it to get my hair bleached, and hasn’t really ever quite looked like the day it did when I bought it. I’m inspired by freehand, chaotic embroidery for this one and like this for a wintery night because it needs time, and patience. Embroidery is an art of slowing down.
This shirt by LANAPLATINDESIGN on Etsy is the mood, but with way more embroidery…
I may also be finishing an old project or two
I read an Instagram post that said having multiple unfinished projects is healthy or something. If that’s true, I’m may live forever. I don’t know what it is but these cool nights make me feel inspired to pick up those old projects and wrap them up. I’m imagining finishing two old vase upcycles I started months ago. Here’s where I left off. I’m dreaming up a big pivot for these…
What projects could you pick back up this winter?
You may also find me trying something totally new
I think us crafters are versatile people. Us creatives are curious, we see a new technique and immediately have to try it. Rug tufting workshop? Sign me up. Plastic beads made from old plastic containers - I’ll try that! A few years ago I randomly started using discarded leather scraps to create my own leather beads. It was the most satisfying thing to see it work. Here’s an example of how that went:
This winter I think I’ll try something totally new. I’m really interested in collage from waste. What upcycle technique are you curious to try?
