Where will you wear your upcycled jewelry?

Plus a new projects feature...

This last week, I pulled out my broken jewelry bins, laid the parts out on my mat, and day-dreamed about how to make the old parts work together to create something new. I imagined using the chain from one necklace, and adding old religious charms from a bin of my grandmothers jewelry as dangling bits. But when it came down to it, I couldn’t get started. Why? I had ideas of what to make, but no vision for where I’d wear it. I had realized I didn’t want to make something I might not wear.

This week, I encourage you to share your upcycled jewelry projects (our August theme!) along with the story of where you’d wear your creation. Going to an event? What are you making to wear there? Did you make something you think you’ll wear with a simple pair of jeans? Share it.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with — and where you’ll wear it — in our threads!

Wear it to the store

What could go better with a pair of jeans!? Especially if you’re shopping in the vintage section. Our 90s JNCO-wearing selves only wish we would have had the chance to pair these upcycled necklaces by deereyedoe with our sweet wide-legged denim. But there’s still time! (get it) These watch-centered upcycles are perfectly paired with basics, and there’s plenty of one of a kind options available at deereyedoe.com if you aren’t inclined to make your own.

Wear these on an anniversary getaway

Who could imagine upcycled PET plastic could ever be so elegant? Well Margherita Burgener could! From a childhood steeped in the tranquility of nature, Margherita has carried a deep respect for the environment into her work, transforming discarded PET plastic into stunning, reimagined jewelry.

Wear it to a red carpet event

This playful bold statement necklace made by Laura Zabo on Etsy, is upcycled from bike inner tube rubber. Laura’s own Esty shop bio says it better than we ever could: In a world overflowing with discarded materials, creativity offers us the power to reimagine waste. What you see here is more than just fashion—it’s a movement. Each piece of jewelry made from upcycled bicycle inner tubes represents a commitment to a more sustainable future.”

“I stopped watching the news, so sick of the bias. Was searching for an alternative that would just tell me WHAT happened, with NO editorializing. I found it. It’s called 1440. It assumes you are smart enough to form your own opinions.”

The return of Five Flip Friday, starting with 5 Inspirational Upcycled Jewelry Artists

Turns out, we’d put this series on hold for much longer than we realized — our last Five Flip Friday post was almost a year ago 😬. But we decided if we can give belongings new life, maybe we can do the same with a series we once loved writing?😄

This post includes corrugated cardboard accessories, jewelry made from recycled skateboard decks, and more.
